Rock Climbing in the Peaks

Even total novices will rapidly be ascending sheltered Peak District rock faces on this short course. Attendees will become proficient in securing the rope, belaying and several climbing techniques, as well as abseiling down. Modern Art in Spain

This historic hillside village, a ancient white village in southern Spain, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the stimulating backdrop for this art retreat. Participants of all abilities – including novices – will be taught how to plan and create abstract artworks. A portion of the time will be spent outside, working on guided exercises out in nature. These initial sketches and watercolour studies will then be expanded upon in the studio, with participants producing several abstract landscapes in acrylic paint to be shown in the local community. Participants has exclusive access of the hotel, which is built around an open courtyard and has a sun terrace with views over the countryside. The cost includes five days’ painting tuition; full board; and an excursion to the nearby fortress and additional local sights.

Vegetarian Culinary in Portugal

This sun-drenched culinary holiday, located at a riverside villa in the central Algarve, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Attendees will master the art of selection of small dishes, attend a hands-on falafel session, refine brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the local market and a local vineyard to sample local vintages, combined with free time for walks by the nearby river, to unwind on the terrace or swim in the pool. The villa, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, plus glamping tents in the grounds.

Hip Hop in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an energizing, welcoming three-day dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, followed by several 90-minute workshops teaching different urban dance forms, then an 60-minute freestyle session to show off those solos. Participants are split into levels based on ability and experience, so it is suitable for those who are completely new to street dance, all the way to advanced dancers or instructors. The camp does not provide lodging but there are several hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is under an hour by rail into central London.

Maritime Singing Weekend in Cornwall

St Ives is the ideal spot for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will be taught traditional shanties from a experienced musician, and have a go at composing original ones. There will be voice exercises, breathing exercises, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The retreat is based at a rural hotel overlooking the bay. Full board are included, including a Cornish cream tea on the first day, cooked or continental breakfasts, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not provided. All together now: “What will we do with the drunken sailor …?”

Creative Writing in Greece

Writer and tutor Greg Mosse runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He covers everything from story structure, characters, locations and tension, to submitting work to publishers. Greg’s wife, the bestselling author Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the beginning and end of the retreat. The retreat is held at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – 10 private accommodations surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to come along). On the last night, budding authors celebrate with a musical performance in the courtyard and a farewell dinner.

Introduction to Apiculture in Mid Wales

A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a wide range of courses on sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend course will help participants understand the basics of apiary management, explore the biology of bees and learn about their ecological importance. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed woodlands, which are home to wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Bed and breakfast the night before is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging during the course is £97.

Yachting for Novices in Essex

These new summer sailing weekends are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. They are designed for adult beginners learning the ropes or more experienced mariners who want a refresher. Participants can hone their helming, strengthen their seamanship and work towards the Royal Yachting Association’s levels one to three in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and overnight options, staying in simple dorms in the waterfront sailing school. The non-residential package includes lunches, while the residential package covers two nights’ accommodation and full board, from hearty breakfasts to evening barbecues.
