Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly headed Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The newly public messages showed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm stated it respected his choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the directors," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its records on the case.
The legislation will subsequently head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his base.
Email Contents
A collection of financier-linked emails released by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to introduce Summers to influential world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the emails were released with the general audience, the former official stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix connections with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
The economist occupied leadership roles under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.
Summers joined the leadership of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
