The child of previous South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she made on online platforms four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her parent.

A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been accused of fuelling this violence and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and came after the ex-leader's arrest for defying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into allegations of impropriety while he was in power.

The defendant has always rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the charges against her were an attempt to address political grievances with her dad after he founded his own party and campaigned against the ruling party.

Backing and Court Representation

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the previous head of state and his family.

A handful of backers from her political organization, her party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.

The defendant's representatives has stated that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling grounds for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings

  • Social media comments from the past form the basis of the state's case
  • Fatal protests in July 2021 resulted in major deaths and monetary damage
  • The individual on trial faces multiple allegations of provocation to unrest
  • Judicial trials are expected to carry on for several court sessions

The court case continues as both sides present their evidence before the court in what is anticipated to be a carefully observed court case with significant policy consequences for South Africa.
