The Mystery Within that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict that awaits.
